West Palm Beach is a city within Palm Beach County with a population of over 101,000 people according to the 2010 census. It stretches a total of 58.2 square miles and is the largest city in Palm Beach County.

For a combined sum of $45,000, Henry Flagler, a Standard oil tycoon, purchased the town site that was originally called “Westpalmbeach.” This name was later decided by 78 people who met to pass the motion to incorporate the Town of West Palm Beach into what was then Dade County. Palm Beach County was later formed by legislature in 1909.

Population doubled from 1920 to 1927 and many of the cities historical structures were built during this period. World War II brought along the construction of the Palm Beach Air Force Base and during the 1950’s many of the soldiers that were stationed there during the war came back to call West Palm Beach their home.

The Palm Beach Mall was built in the 1960’s and also helped drive the economy of West Palm Beach. During the 1990’s many developments such as CityPlace and the restoration of the downtown district helped boost the entertainment, shopping and dining markets.
