What Is HUD?

HUD stands for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD oversees the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), which provides federal insurance on home mortgages. When someone defaults on their FHA payment, the lender will foreclose on the home and HUD will take ownership of the house and pay what is owed to the lender.

HUD also sponsors housing counseling agencies throughout the country designed to help you make informed decisions about housing, loans, and your personal credit.

HUD’s website is very informative and can be found at www.hud.gov

“HUD’s mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination, and transform the way HUD does business.”
