The City of Stuart, FL is known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World”. First settled in 1870, the original name of the city was Potsdam by Otto Stypman, originally of Potsdam Germany. Otto and his brother Ernest were the first owners of “Downtown Stuart”. Being large landowners, Otto and Ernest found their fortune pineapple farming their Stuart, FL land. Sitting on the Saint Lucie River, Stuart, Florida’s current name was inspired by Homer Hine Stuart Jr. This was confirmed by correspondence by Homer and his brother Inglis in the archives at the Flagler Museum, land records and newspapers; the origin of the name Stuart referred to the settlement on the north side of the Saint Lucie River.
Stuart, FL located on the East coast bordering The St Lucie and Indian Rivers, offers many outdoor activities for everyone. Summertime population is about 17,285 and increases to 21,087 once the snowbirds arrive for the winter season. Currently 6.25 sq miles, this growing community is annexing new property to both the north and south. The current Roosevelt Bridge was completed in 1986 and the Evans Crary Bridge, leading to Stuart’s beaches, was just recently finished.
Government sectors, retail, service, hospitality and construction drive the economy of Stuart, FL. Main employers include Vought Aircraft, Martin Memorial Hospital, Municipal Government and of course thousands of successful small businesses.
Flagler Park, located next to City Hall is just one of the many large parks among the parks and small end street parks maintained by the City of Stuart. Senior Citizen programs, youth activities, club meetings and entertainment programs are managed by the Community Services Division.
